Topic: Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma Informed Care is very theoretical; it is often difficult to discern what that means for daily work with clients/participants/patients. There is a lot of information about trauma in mainstream direct care work these days. Sifting through it to determine not only what is relevant but what to do about it can be difficult. Breaking the Trauma-Informed Care concepts down to practical do’s and don’ts are important to discerning what it all means for daily work with clients/participants/patients. Self-care for the provider is also important in providing trauma informed care.

At the end of the workshop, learners will be able to…

• Define the 4 R’s of Trauma Informed Care.
• Identify at least 4 do’s & don’ts in their Trauma Informed Work with clients/participants/patients.
• Describe at least 3 benefits of a Universal Precautionary approach to Trauma Informed Care.
• Identify at least 1 thing they will do for better self-care.
• Complete an Integration Plan toward implementing TIC do’s & don’ts or other information from the workshop.

Knowledge, Competence, Performance Need: What do the learners need? 

Learners need to understand that most people (direct care workers, as well as clients/participants/patients) have suffered trauma or moderate stress over a long period of time & that this suffering often informs the moment & impedes the work that needs to be done. Learners also need interpretation of the Trauma Informed Care concepts & practical skills in order to assist clients/participants/patients in managing the moment & maximizing success in programs & their lives.

Scope of Practice: Who needs this education?

• Social workers
• Anyone working with clients/participants/patients who are stressed or who have been traumatized
• Anyone supervising staff who work with clients/participants/patients who are stressed or who have been traumatized

How will the education be facilitated?  Rationale for this format?

Didactic, interactive presentation to provide Trauma Informed Care information in a short time-frame; solicitation of examples from the learners to make the topic relevant to their situations; Integration Plan to ensure the information can be integrated in ways that makes sense to the audience.
