" Ethical Dilemmas In Complex Times: Case Studies In A New Era"

Social Workers participating in this course will receive 3.5 clinical continuing education clock hours.
Social workers have a key leadership role in developing policies and programs, as well as providing HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. Our practice is challenged by clients and communities struggling for limited resources, policies and directives, questions around confidentiality and disclosure, and the impact stigma and discrimination. Clinical concerns include aging with multiple health challenges, end of life issues, medication adherence, and equal access to prevention and treatment options, as well as the very real and growing issues of homelessness, substance use and abuse, and societal bias and discrimination. Practitioners are met with difficult decisions, which can raise questions or interventions that can create ethical dilemmas at the individual, organizational, or systemic level.
As social workers engage in organizational and community work, our work also requires self-awareness and the ability to assess implicit and explicit biases. Understanding the role and impact of implicit bias and explicit bias is a critical step towards addressing ethical dilemmas and challenges that can occur at the individual, organizational, or systemic level. Using case vignettes, workshop participants will approach the discussion from a holistic lens and discuss and practice a framework to identify, analyze, and address to ethical dilemmas at the micro and macro levels of practice. Participants will have the opportunity to explore our individual and institutional attitudes and bias, the how to use the power of the five guiding principles (of ethical decision making) to be more mindful in ethical decision making. Practitioners across all fields of practice – be it in direct services, pre-service, and/or administrative roles are welcome. Come prepared to work in small and large groups and to share resources.
Objectives:
Understand implicit and explicit bias and the role and impact on our practice
Dialog about approaches to culturally relevant practice, and the complexities of stigma, bias, and discrimination at the individual and systems levels.
Review the five principles used to guide ethical decisions.
Apply a decision-making framework to identify opportunities and solutions for addressing ethical dilemmas.

Evelyn P. Tomaszewski, MSW, ACSW
Evelyn P. Tomaszewski MSW is Program Director and an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA). Evelyn brings over 25 years of experience as a public health social worker practicing in in the US and globally. Prior to Mason, she served as Senior Policy Advisor and Project Director with the National Association of Social Workers , where she directed the transdisciplinary HIV/AIDS Spectrum Mental Health Project in partnership with the SAMSHA National HIV Mental Health Training Resource Center. As an independent consultant, Evelyn has worked with projects ranging from program and workforce development and community and systems level change - to building multi-sectorial partnerships and initiatives with non-profit, public and private industry leaders in health and behavioral health, public health, and social services. Her expertise and research interests include HIV syndemics, global mental health access, LGBTQ equity, ethics and social work practice, social and economic justice, HIV and aging, social services workforce strengthening, and global violence prevention. Evelyn earned her MSW from WVU, and a Graduate Certificate (Public Health) form GMU. She serves as an elected at-large member with the PASHWA Board of Directors.

Evelyn P. Tomaszewski
Evelyn P. Tomaszewski, MSW, ACSW is committed to actively engaging diverse stakeholders, across the private and public sectors, to create and sustain positive systems level change. As Executive Director of Pearl Associates, she provides consultative services focused on training and strategic facilitation, building capacity through business development and program management, and providing subject matter technical expertise. Evelyn is known for leveraging networks, skills, and expertise to help build action driven collaborations and implement mission driven strategic initiatives, and her commitment to partnering with internal and external stakeholders to build and strengths-based programs and leadership. She is a member of the Adjunct Faculty, George Mason University (Fairfax, VA), Department of Social Work.
Evelyn previously served in a senior level position at the National Association of Social Workers, where she was responsible for a diverse portfolio that supported the association’s human rights, social justice, and international program initiatives in the US and globally; and facilitated membership engagement to forward the mission and initiatives to address LGBT equity, violence prevention, and social services systems strengthening. Evelyn simultaneously served as NASW Project Director with the National HIV and Mental Health Training Resource Center, part of a SAMHSA funded collaborative program that trained over 40000 providers in integration of evidence-driven HIV prevention, care, and treatment into their practice setting(s).
Evelyn is currently a member of the (SAMHSA) National Workgroup to Address the Needs of Children and Youth Who Are LGBTQI2-S and Their Families, the Forum on Global Violence Prevention (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine), Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice (Global Mental Health Task Force Chair), ABA Commission on Youth at Risk, and CDC Task Force for the Elimination of Perinatal HIV. She proudly serves on the PASHWA Board of Directors and holds an MSW degree from WVU (go ‘eers!) and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from GMU.
Jill Sabatine
Harvard University Health Services as a Case Manager.
Jill is a native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Ohio University. She earned her MSW from the University of Connecticut and also has a MPH from the University of Massachusetts. Jill has worked extensively with young people as a school Social Worker and in a pediatric hospital emergency room. She has worked since 2008 as Adjunct Faculty in the Social Work department at Providence College and has been a Clinical Manager at AIDS Care Ocean State since 1993. Jill currently also works at Harvard University Health Services as a Case Manager. Jill was the Chair of the NASW Spectrum Project which worked nationally to train Social Workers on issues impacting PLWHA.
